Lifting & Rigging Hardware

At Empire Rigging, we recognize that safe and efficient lifting operations rely on dependable, high-quality rigging hardware. Whether you're handling heavy industrial equipment, construction materials, or shipping cargo, the proper hardware is vital for load control, safety, and operational success.

Understanding the role of each component in a rigging system is essential for creating a setup that operates reliably and safely. Below are the main types of lifting and rigging hardware used across industries and available for purchase from Empire Rigging.

Shackles

Shackles are essential connecting links in most lifting and rigging operations. They come in various configurations, designed to accommodate different loads and rigging setups.

•   Anchor Shackles (Bow Shackles): Include a larger loop to accommodate the attachment of multiple slings from different angles. This design is perfect for situations where side loading may occur.
•   Chain Shackles (D Shackles): Achieve a more streamlined profile, ideal for straight-line pulling. Commonly used in towing and lifting operations where alignment is preserved.
•   Pin Types: Choose between a screw pin (easy installation), a bolt-type (more secure in dynamic applications), or a round pin (ideal for static, long-term setups).

All of the shackles we offer are load-rated and tested to meet or exceed safety standards.

Rigging Hooks

Hooks quickly attach or detach loads from rigging systems. Each type of rigging hook is designed for specific conditions:

•   Eye Hooks: Permanently attached to lifting devices, such as chains or slings, these are robust and help reduce the risk of disconnection.
•   Clevis Hooks: They feature a U-shaped clevis and pin connection, which makes them removable and flexible, ideal for frequent rigging changes.
•   Swivel Hooks: They can rotate freely, which prevents the lift line from twisting. This feature is handy when loads rotate during the lift.

Most hooks have spring-loaded safety latches to prevent accidental detachment during lifting.

Hoist Rings

Hoist rings provide a safer and more versatile alternative to traditional eye bolts, particularly in angular or rotational lift applications.

•   Swivel Hoist Rings: Can rotate 360° and pivot 180°, distributing the load evenly and reducing the risk of breakage.
•   Heavy-Duty Models: Rated for high-load applications in aerospace, machining, and heavy manufacturing industries.

Their unique design enables them to handle off-axis loading, making them perfect for complex lifting environments.

Turnbuckles

Turnbuckles are adjustable connectors that fine-tune tension in wire rope, cable, and tie rod assemblies.

•   Jaw-to-Jaw Turnbuckles: Provide secure attachment through clevis ends; frequently utilized in structural rigging and bracing.
•   Eye-to-Eye Turnbuckles: Designed for fixed-term connections with minimal movement.
•   Hook-to-Eye Turnbuckles: Offer quick and temporary connections, perfect for rapid adjustments.

Turnbuckles are offered in both galvanized and stainless steel, making them suitable for indoor and outdoor applications while providing resistance to corrosion.

Master Links

Master links act as the main connection in a multi-leg sling or chain sling arrangement.

•   Oblong and Pear-Shaped Links: Fit most overhead crane hooks and are sized to handle multiple sling legs.
•   Weldless and Welded Options: Welded links provide added strength for heavier loads; weldless types are lighter and easier to maneuver.

Their large inner diameter facilitates easy attachment to other rigging components while preserving full strength and flexibility.

Blocks & Sheaves

Blocks and sheaves offer a mechanical advantage, enabling one operator to lift or redirect extremely heavy loads with reduced effort.

•   Snatch Blocks: These have a side opening that allows you to insert a rope or cable without threading it through the end. They are perfect for temporary lifting and pulling.
•   Tackle Blocks: Used in more permanent rigging configurations, where multiple sheaves significantly reduce effort.
•   Swivel Blocks: Help minimize line twist and enhance directional control.

Each block is constructed using durable materials and high-strength sheaves to guarantee long-lasting performance under load.

Plate and Beam Lifting Clamps

Clamps grip and lift steel plates, beams, and other structural components.

•   Vertical Plate Clamps: Engineered to elevate and rotate plates while ensuring a firm grip.
•   Horizontal Plate Clamps: Work together and are ideal for transporting plates parallel to the floor.
•   Beam Clamps: Attach to I-beams for lifting or as a securing point for hoists or slings.

These clamps provide a secure and quick method for handling heavy, flat materials in fabrication and construction settings.

Wire Rope Fittings

Wire rope fittings ensure secure terminations and connections in cable-based rigging systems.

•   Wire Rope Clips (Crosby Clips): Used to create cable loop ends. Available in malleable iron or forged steel for added strength.
•   Thimbles: Protect wire rope from wear and kinking at termination points.
•   Sleeves & Ferrules: Used for permanent terminations and crimping; often found in marine or architectural applications.
•   Wedge Sockets & Swage Sockets: Facilitate rapid changes of worn rope sections without the need for complete re-rigging.

Properly matched and installed wire rope fittings are crucial for safe and efficient rigging systems.

Safety Standards and Hardware Selection Tips

Choosing the proper lifting and rigging hardware is essential for safety and operational efficiency. Here are some key factors to consider:

Load Requirements

Always choose hardware that exceeds the working load limit (WLL) of your lift. Pay attention to the weight, balance, and center of gravity of your load to prevent overloads and equipment failure.

Environmental Factors

Corrosive environments, extreme temperatures, and chemical exposure can degrade specific materials. For example:

•   Stainless steel is resistant to corrosion in marine or chemical applications.
•   Galvanized finishes provide extra protection in outdoor or humid environments.

Compatibility

Ensure that all components—shackles, hooks, chains, slings—are compatible in size, rating, and function. Using incompatible hardware can create stress points and raise the risk of failure.

Safety & Compliance

All lifting and rigging hardware must comply with strict standards:

•   ASME B30.26 and OSHA guidelines regulate design, use, and inspection.
•   Regular inspection for cracks, wear, deformation, and corrosion is crucial.
